Editorial comment
July was the highest-traffic month in the past 12 months. But I do not yet consider that evidence of lasting reader growth.
What stood out this month?
Direct drove the traffic peak
Direct accounted for three quarters of the increase in Google Analytics sessions from June to July. Direct is the group where Google Analytics cannot always identify a visit's original source.
More than 90% of the increase in Direct came from records associated with China, Singapore and the United States. Those visits were spread across many pages, so the increase cannot be explained by the success of a single article.
The numbers of sessions, active users and page views in these records are very close to one another. This unusual pattern is a measurement warning. Google Analytics cannot tell whether it represents genuine reader interest or automated traffic.
I therefore do not treat the traffic peak as proof of a growing readership.
The strongest search signal came from an older guide
July is the first full month for which I can use Google Search Console data. More than half of the clicks from Google Search that I could match to existing articles went to CI/CD for PHP: A Comprehensive Guide. Google Analytics Organic Search data also highlighted the same page.
It matters that two separate measurement systems point to the same page. However, the guide did not set a new record within its own 12-month history. It ranked third for both total sessions and sessions from Organic Search.
My decision is to keep the guide accurate and up to date. I will not turn a single month into a broader publishing strategy. August's data will show whether the signal repeats.
Data note
Google Analytics has records for every day in July. Separate Analytics reports differ by a few sessions, so I do not force those totals to match.
Search Console data covers the full month of July. June's data is partial, so I do not compare the two months directly. The visible search queries also do not account for every click to a page.
For now, I am making two separate decisions: not to treat the Direct-heavy traffic peak as growth, and to test the CI/CD guide's search signal again in August.
