Editorial comment

Organic Search accounted for most of the difference

In Google Analytics, May ranked last in the 12-month record for sessions, active users and page views. Organic Search and Direct sessions also ranked last over the same period.

The channels behind the change were not the same as in April. Direct, the Google Analytics group for which the original source is not always shown, made the largest negative contribution to April's month-on-month difference. In May, Organic Search accounted for by far the largest share. The two months therefore do not support a single-channel explanation for the low totals.

The landing pages do not point to a single content explanation either. The WSL 2 guide showed the largest decrease in recorded sessions, but decreases appeared across many landing pages. The homepage moved in the opposite direction and reached its highest share of the total in the 12-month record. Yet its own session count remained near the bottom of its historical range. The high share does not signal a strong month for the homepage. It reflects a larger decrease across the rest of the landing-page total.

Google Analytics returned no daily row for nine days in May. I do not count those gaps as zero. The monthly Google Analytics figures show May's position in the 12-month record, but they do not establish the exact size of the April-to-May change or a lasting trend.

No Google Search Console data is available for this period. I cannot treat Google Analytics Organic Search sessions as evidence of changes in search visibility, rankings, click-through rate or queries. The May data does not support an intervention focused on one article or on SEO.
